Cross-Reference Everything
in Your Word Document

Word's built-in cross-reference tool requires manual insertion for every single reference — and breaks when you edit nearby text. Research confirms manual cross-referencing “can lead to inefficiencies, inconsistencies, and errors” (Staehle & Ziegler, 2024). KERNIT's Cross-Reference Hyperlinker scans your DOCX and adds clickable hyperlinks to all citations, figures, tables, equations, and sections in seconds.

TL;DR — Quick answer

Upload your Word DOCX to KERNIT's Cross-Reference Hyperlinker. It automatically detects and hyperlinks citations ([1], (Smith, 2024), superscript), figure references, table references, equation references, section references, algorithm references, listing references, and DOIs — all in your browser, in seconds. Free to use.

What are cross-references?

Cross-references are clickable links within a document that jump to related content — a citation [1] that jumps to reference #1 in the bibliography, a "Figure 3" mention that jumps to the actual figure, an equation number (4) that jumps to the equation. They let readers navigate a manuscript without scrolling or searching.

In LaTeX and PDF, cross-references are standard — packages like hyperref generate them automatically during compilation. In Microsoft Word, they require manual setup through the Insert > Cross-reference dialog, one reference at a time. Worse, Word cross-references break easily: edit the text near a reference and you get the infamous "Error! Reference source not found" message.

KERNIT eliminates this problem entirely. Instead of inserting cross-references one by one in Word, you upload your finished DOCX and KERNIT adds all the hyperlinks at once — automatically, in your browser, in seconds.

KERNIT's Cross-Reference Hyperlinker detects and links 10 types of in-document references:

  • Numbered citations [1], [2-5], [1,3,7]
  • Author-date citations (Smith, 2024)
  • Superscript citations
  • Figure references Fig. 1, Figure 2
  • Table references Table 1, Tbl. 3
  • Equation references Eq. (4), Equation 2
  • Section references Section 3, Sec. 2.1
  • Algorithm references Algorithm 1
  • Listing references Listing 2
  • DOIs — verified via CrossRef and hyperlinked to doi.org

Three steps to hyperlinked cross-references

  1. Upload your DOCX Go to kernit.org/hyperlinker and drop your Word file. You can upload multiple files at once for batch processing.
  2. Configure reference detection Choose auto-detect mode to let KERNIT identify your citation style, or manually select numbered, author-date, or superscript. Toggle which reference types to hyperlink.
  3. Download your hyperlinked file Click process and download your DOCX with all cross-references converted to clickable internal hyperlinks. Your original formatting is preserved.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is KERNIT free for cross-referencing?

Yes. Upload your DOCX at kernit.org/hyperlinker and download with all cross-references hyperlinked. No credit card or account required to start.

  • Does KERNIT work with any DOCX file?

Yes. Unlike Zotero or EndNote linking tools, KERNIT works with any Word DOCX regardless of how citations were created — typed manually, pasted from Google Docs, or managed by any reference manager.

  • What citation styles does KERNIT support?

Numbered [1], author-date (Smith, 2024), and superscript. Auto-detect mode identifies the style automatically, so you do not need to configure anything for most documents.

  • Does my file get uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens in your browser. Your manuscript never leaves your device. You can verify this by opening the Network tab in your browser's developer tools — no document content is transmitted.

  • Can I process multiple files at once?

Yes. The hyperlinker accepts batch uploads. Drop all your DOCX files at once, process them, and download all hyperlinked files together.
