Export to DOCX

KERNIT exports DOCX files with all journal formatting embedded — fonts, margins, column layout, heading styles, and table formatting. The file opens correctly in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice without additional configuration.

How to export DOCX

  1. Format your paper using a journal preset

Select a journal preset (IEEE, APA, Nature, etc.) and paste or type your manuscript content into the KERNIT editor.

  2. Click "Export DOCX"

Click the Export DOCX button in the toolbar. KERNIT generates the Word file entirely in your browser.

  3. File downloads as .docx

The .docx file downloads automatically to your device. No account required for free exports.

  4. Open in Word or upload to your journal's submission portal

Open the file in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice — or upload it directly to your journal's submission system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How large is a typical DOCX export?
A standard manuscript without embedded images is typically 50–200 KB. Files with figures or tables may be larger depending on content.
Does the formatting survive round-tripping through Word?
Yes. KERNIT embeds all paragraph styles, font definitions, and layout settings directly in the DOCX XML. Opening and re-saving in Word preserves the formatting.
Are the custom styles named?
Yes. Paragraph styles are named according to the journal preset — for example "IEEE Heading 1" or "APA Body Text". This makes it easy to identify and adjust styles in Word's Styles panel.
Are track changes preserved from DOCX uploads?
No. When you upload a DOCX file as input, KERNIT extracts the plain text content and reformats it. Track changes and comments in the original file are not carried over.
Can I further edit the exported DOCX?
Yes. The exported DOCX is a standard Word file. You can open it in any compatible application and make manual edits — adjust wording, add comments, or insert figures — without breaking the formatting.
